Description
English: This image shows two small fossil gastropod shell exterior impressions in blue-green shale from the Coleraine formation. Gastropods are more commonly known as snails. The Coleraine formation is a Cretaceous period geological formation in Minnesota that contains fossils from the Western Interior Seaway approximately 90 million years ago. This layer was exposed by iron mining on the Mesabi Iron Range. This fossil was found in Hill Annex Mine State Park in Calumet, MN. The fossil was collected for the Hill Annex Paleontology Project which is partnered with the Minnesota Discovery Center and the Science Museum of Minnesota. The image was taken with a ZEISS Smartzoom 5 microscope at 160X magnification using stitching and extended depth of field.
