| Description |
English: Old slate quarry in Teifi gorge Overshadowed now by trees, these cliffs were in the C19 the focus of a substantial industry in this part of the Teifi valley. The slates extracted here were transported downriver in flatbottomed boats until in 1873 when the Whitland and Taf light railway was built to serve the quarrying areas.
Most of the quarrying was done by small one-man or family enterprises until some mechanisation was introduced. At one time 500 workers from the nearby village of Cilgerran were employed here. The last quarry closed in 1938. Now the damp, dim rockfaces provide homes for birds and bats and other wildlife. |
