Afrikaans: In die Grotte van Sint Pieter, suid van Maastricht, Nederland. Sulke oonde was gebruik deur mense wat in die grotte weggekruip het in oorlogstye. Takke en stompe was in die oond aan die brand gesteek en daarna uitgehaal en teen die mure geplaas om die kamers en gange te verwarm. Die oondmure was deur die vure verwarm en kon nou gebruik word om voedsel te verwarm. Geen skoorsteen is aanwesig nie - rook wat deur 'n skoorsteen ontsnap het sou die vyand 'n duidelike teken gegee het van die skuilendes se ligging. English: In the Caves of St. Pieter, south of the Netherlands in Maastricht. Ovens like these were used by people hiding in the caves during war times. Branches and ovens were lit inside the oven to warm it up; afterwards the smouldering wood would be put against the walls to warm up the rooms and hallways. Thanks to the warm walls of the oven, food could now be prepared inside it. Note that there no chimney is present: smoke rising from a chimney would have led the enemy directly to the hiding place. |
